    So Yuri - the masterblaster - got that part right about the reverse complement (his pango mRNA is the reverse complement), That being said - I am a little biased toward most of the copy choice errors involving mixed virus infections for the reason that the replication machinery for the virus is complicated by the fact that you need thenucleocapsid proteins and other factors bound to the template to get efficient replication "transcription" ( the pos toneg first round or if you a re a neg strand virus the first neg to pos round). Does not mean it can't involve a mRNA -Yuri even found some examples in the literature - just means for me it's much more infrequent.

    The old schoolers call the first round "replication" (generates the replicative intermediates). The second round they call "transcription"- generates the mRNAs.

    Also I have always considered transcription to be DNA->RNA?

    @Robert Garry The 'second round' takes place in the ER so might be more likely to have lots of other templates toswitch too, I guess. But first round will be way more consequential as all progeny would have the insert and the spike proteins would have the FCS.

    @Andrew Rambaut Agree - I don't like the terminology either - usually just say + to - or - to +. and for a positive virusof course as you say - to + can also be creating genomes so "replication" in my mind.

    Yes indeed - lots of the accessory proteins are just so the replicative intermediates can associate with membrane.
