Rupert's take down of that poll was brilliant! F Bollocks is such an arse - unbelievable.

Yes great job Kristian - unfortunately necessary. Kudos also for proper use of the word hooey in a tweet and good
response to GVN.

```ppttssrlrraTsg```
spike glycoprotein [BtPa-BetaCoV/GD2013]
GenBank: AIA62343.1 This one is from another Merbecovirus a little closer to where it might have mattered in
China. Bottom line, and maybe it's my myopia for not realizing this before, but there are bat betacoronaviruses in
China that have furin cleavage sites that evolved naturally. This one also has a predicted O-glycan, which may or
may not be used.
pptistrlrratSgvS spike [Bat coronavirus (BtCoV/A434/2005)]
GenBank: ABG11962.1 Here's the other onefrom china - two predicted O-glycans
https://virological.org/t/the-sarbecovirus-origin-of-sars-cov-2-s-furin-cleavage-site/536 makes this conversation a bit
more relevant - although that virological post seems to have been one of the factors that sent Alina down the rabbit
hole.
ppttsTrvrraTSgvsS spike glycoprotein [Pipistrellus abramus bat coronavirus HKU5-related]
GenBank: QHA24687.1 best for last FOUR predicted O-glycans.
Yes, I saw that one. Those furin cleavage sites are definitely out there in nature.
The other common thread is that when they appear they are generally insertions: Here's HKU5 S aligned with
closely related HKU4 S Merbecoviruses. Pattern repeats with HKU1, OC43 (Embecoviruses]. SARS2 vs the other
Sarbecoviruses is showing it can happen with the Sarbecoviruses. [shared file(s): image.png]
[Eddie Holmes]
That's really interesting!
[2020-09-20 17:35:44]
[Eddie Holmes]
Is that a furin insertion?
Bob, time for your first Virological post... this is important :wink:
