Here is Wade's quote on the FCS. "Viruses have all kinds of clever tricks, so why does the furin cleavage site stand out? Because of all known SARS-related beta-coronaviruses, only SARS2 possesses a furin cleavage site. All the other viruses have their S2 unit cleaved at a different site and by a different mechanism." It's of course a "clever trick," and misleading at best. Other betacoronaviruses (MERS, HKU5, HKU1, OC43, HKU24https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1873506120304165;https://virological.org/t/naturally-occurring-indels-in-multiple-coronavirus-spikes/560) and a plethora of other viruses (flu, HIV, parmyxoviruses to name just a few) use FCS in the same way as SC2.
