Don't want to distract from this important work and I think @Andrew Rambaut has already figured most of this out, but there is a relevant story about furin cleavage sites in MERS CoV. This sequence is from HKU5, which has a very MERS-like spike [ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23720729/ ] and a somewhat better FCS than the minimal one inMERS-CoV. The capitalized STS are predicted O-glycans. Maybe these are used maybe not, but coincidences keep popping up {HKU1, OC43, MHC etc]. It's another data point that I believe shows that the furin site in SARS2 could evolve naturally. At the end of the day [thanks to this good work K and E] besides the wild thrashing around the "unusual" FCS is about all the Yans and Chans of the world are going to have left.
