   Yes - the mechanism seems to be mutation of a "premature" stop codon. However, the issue of insertions and particularly deletions (including deletions near the furin site) is a real thing - becoming a problem with the animal models according to a discussion I was having with respiratory pathogens branch at CDC on Friday - if the stocksare not properly grown [ie by passing a low MOI} the furin site gets screwed and the viruses are no longer pathogenic in animals. Live challenges (yes - @Kristian Andersen I agree -no placebo) may be they only way out to find vaccines that actually work.

   Trump going to force through an EUA for _any_ vaccine by end of October is going to be the biggest - and by far most consequential - mistake America will do when it comes to COVID-19. And there's been plenty of major mistakes along the way... Not optimistic to say the least.

   I'm pretty sure he's going to try to do this - esp as the poll numbers either stay the same or more likely move a bit more to Biden/Harris - this is literally who he is and nothing else other than getting re-elected matters in the least -I'm also pretty sure this is going to be a line in the sand for not only the vaccine manufacturers but the FDA, NIH, even the Warp Speed commandos themselves - be ready to speak out.

   Yeah, it's crazy when "Big Pharma" should be the ones we put our trust in and not the (formerly) best protection agency in the world. It's loopy.While this announcement (if it actually comes out - but I'm sure it will) is good, it still won't prevent him from forcingthrough an EUA. I'm 99% sure it'll happen - irrespective of all the "checks and balances" in place, including statements from the main vaccine manufactures.

   Yeah, presumably it would require a company to stand behind the submission of all the data - but the trials themselves are not run by the companies and they're not involved in data generation, so I think the EUA could likelybe pushed through with everything already available. They can of course refuse to distribute the vaccine, but the crazy thing here is that Trump likely has no or very little interest in actually distributing the vaccine - he just wants itapproved and then leave it to others to figure out what to do. The main risk here is that with the EUA, some would demand the vaccine and it'd sideline the clinical trials, causing very significant delays for the development of_actual_ safe and efficacious vaccines.
