Can I just loop back to an earlier chat: @Andrew Rambaut in A.23.1 (Uganda I think) I assume you don't see Doug and Phil (the mutation in nsp12)? So, the elevated number of changes in this lineage is due to a different evolutionary pathway facilitated by another 'enabling' mutation like Doug (or Phil)? Do you see mutations that arestructurally/functionally similar to Doug and Phil? I'm just wondering if this parallel evolutionary process provides some important clues?
-
It doesn't have Doug but it does have his brother Q613H. No Phil (a minority of them have nsp12 mutations but haven't dug into those yet). Does also have a bunch of NSP6 mutations in similar places to the deletion.
-
Also I have had some backtracking about the P323L coming up in monkeys - data looks dodgy apparently.
-
A.23.1 also has a cluster in the UK with E484K
-
Fascinating. So, D614G or Q613H (and perhaps linked mutations) push the virus down a particular evolutionary 'corridor' which then means that only certain subsequent mutations will follow?
-
Interestingly it seems that P681R arose after Q613H: [shared file(s): A.23.1_2021-02-02.tree.png]
-
Ha. So that parallels P681H in B.1.1.7?
