SALAZAR: And so do you have to report this kind of stuff to NIH if they're funding portions of a grant, or the whole grant? Because we're aware of -- DR. BARIC: This is before or after? Certainly the NIH knows because a paper, a progress report will have the existence of the viruses that are there. And then it's published, and NIH has access to the paper, as well. So they get this information, yes. MS. SALAZAR: But it's not something that you -- DR. BARIC: I don't believe there's a formalized process for DNA on a filter paper. If there was a pathogen, for example, then there are intricate processes involved. MS. SALAZAR: What about for a mouse model? DR. BARIC: Intricate. MS. SALAZAR: So do you have to get it approved? DR. BARIC: You have to get all kinds of approval from China, and you have to get approval to ship -- well, the person who did that in my lab at the time did all that paperwork. But you had to have export approvals to send the stuff, and so it took -- all I remember is it took about a year and a half to get all the paperwork done to ship the mice.
