MS. SALAZAR: And then going back real quick to the
RO1 grant. You weren't an official collaborator, or PI,
co-PI, until later on. But you did provide a letter of
support --
DR. BARIC: Yes.
MS. SALAZAR: -- for the initial grant in 2014. Is
that right?
DR. BARIC: Well, I may have. It wouldn't surprise me
if I did. If he asked me, I would've, yes.
MS. SALAZAR: Okay. And then did you provide any
mouse models or anything like that prior to your
involvement formally later on?
DR. BARIC: To Peter?
MS. SALAZAR: To Peter or to, with --
DR. BARIC: Okay. Around 2013 or 2014, Zhengli Shi
identified two new sarbecoviruses called SHC014 and WIV1.
She was able to culture WIV1 in cell culture, and they
published a paper in Nature on that. And we met at a
meeting and we had some discussions. Ultimately, she
provided me with the sequences, and we used that, of the
spike, going at the spike like a protein. And so we build
chimeric viruses.
