Just to add that viruses obviously do a lot of things to enhance replication besides just better adsorption, binding and fusion, including inhibiting interferonhttps://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1008737 . This is where nsp6 might come intoohttps://www.cell.com/cell-reports/pdfExtended/S2211-1247(20)31223-7 nsp6 also inhibitsautophagyhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4203519/ which could enhance replication by preventingdegradation of its sometimes weird proteins. Why that particular 9 nucleotide deletion in nsp6 keeps popping is not clear - but it's an important clue - it fits the pattern of being in an external loop.
