Activity Remarks m k Ty pe Remark RE MA RK * DASZAK was asked publicly by NIH to retrieve the original type-specimen used by WIV for genetic analysis, and return it to the United States. He was also asked to explain several aspects of their collaboration, including related to cell phone data. DASZAK called the requirements "outrageous" and does not appear to intend to comply with them (https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/08/nih-imposes-outrageous-conditions-resuming-coronavirusgrant-targeted-trump) * DASZAK and EcoHealth has been awarded a number of contracts and grants from the U.S. federal government. These include contracts with the DHS Chemical and Biological Threat Division. Many items that EcoHealth studies are likely to be subject to serious non-disclosure agreements with the U.S. government and/or be export controlled. More background information in the kind of research that DASZAK is heavily involved in. A lot of the funding DASZAK receives is put towards "gain of function research" also known as biological weapons research. This research involves experimentation that aims or is expected to increase the transmissibility and/or virulence of pathogens. Such research, when conducted by responsible scientists, usually aims to improve understanding of disease causing agents, their interaction with human hosts, and/or their potential to cause pandemics. The ultimate objective of such research is to better inform public health and preparedness efforts and/or development of medical countermeasures. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4996883/ In gain of function research, genome sequences are reconstructed/reformulated and are inserted into human/animal cells to be studied on how the "new" sequence effects humans and/or animals. There is a lot of criticism on gain of function research in regards to ethics and if the science is worth the risks of creating a potentially harmful virus or disease. In 2013, DASZAK was a coauthor of publication "Isolation and characterization of a bat SARS-like coronavirus that uses the ACE2 receptor" with Zhengli SHI and Ralph BARIC. This paper is of significance due to the first reporting of a SL-CoV-WIV1 (SARS-like coronavirus WIV1) binding to human cells and infecting them. https://www.nature.com/articles/nature12711#Sec2 Essentially, DASZAK and collaborators at WIV created a bat coronavirus capable of directly infecting humans. A follow up article published in Nature magazine on 12/12/2015 titled "Engineered bat virus stirs debate over risky research, Lab-made coronavirus related to SARS can infect human cells" debates "whether engineering lab variants of viruses with possible pandemic potential is worth the risks." https://www.nature.com/news/engineered-bat-virus-stirs-debate-over-risky-research- %201.18787 During the inspection, it is hard to say if DASZAK will be forthcoming with information.
