Have any of you read the Wade article in a little more detail? I'm still going through it, but it's shockingly bad - Imean, almost every single paragraph contains complete falsehoods and misunderstandings(/representations?) ofbasic scientific concepts. I only skimmed it previously, but reading through this, I'm totally stumped. It's as if he has never read a biology book.

I tried, but it made me so angry that I could literally feel my blood pressure begin to rise to dangerous levels so I hadto stop. I just can't read this shit otherwise it will kill me. Baltimore's quote is hilarious. I bet he was on the phone with Jesse.

I'm honestly laughing reading this - it's completely absurd.

    It's dangerous though - I mean: [shared file(s): Screen Shot 2021-05-07 at 4.48.22 PM.png]

Good points on the VOC/VOI stuff. I think the WHO proposal is simply about politics, particularly trying to avoid the association with particular places (which the press will totally ignore). The greek names is ok I guess and not afocanuba. All a bit pointless.

And, of course, this (too long for screen shot...) [shared file(s): Screen Shot 2021-05-07 at 4.50.27 PM.png]

@Robert Garry - I think it might be worth reaching out to GVN to see if they want to respond to this. I can't take the lead on something like this, but it's quite serious when a journalist as high profile as Wade (despite him being anidiot) is calling for people to "blame" virologists for the COVID-19 pandemic. It's shocking, frankly.

Perhaps ASM/ASV would be better. Need to avoid the response from the loose-knit community. There's so much hate in Wade's article it's hard to know where to begin.

True. Might also just be better to leave it - it's shockingly hateful. I'm wondering if I should ping Jesse to warn him about this article since his Science commentary will be mixed upwith Wade's article AND Jesse may well not read the Wade piece in detail and not realize what it actually says.

No, Jesse has made his own bed - let him lie in it

My advice is to do nothing: just focus on doing the best science you can Jesse is old enough to look after himself

Yeah, fair points. And yeah - I'll let this one lie (although I will talk to Jon next week, although not about the Wade piece specifically)

Good plan The only way through this in the long term is getting more data. I'm doing my best on that front. Focus on the science. The rest is noise.

Couldn't agree more. It's really shocking to see a former NYT journalist write something this hateful though - with completely flawed'science' thrown in. Plenty of scientists are sharing this article - I'm wondering if they're realizing exactly what hewrote...Oh well. Time for beer.
