Heard that WHO report will [likely] be published tomorrow, midday US time.

In case people are interested in some light "science" entertainment. [shared file(s): [TODAY 4PM PST] IMM Seminar Series: Professor George F. Gao]

This seems, well, like a lot of mutations. https://www.krisp.org.za/publications.php?pubid=330

That's insanity - from three people. Spread of SC2 in populations with high levels of immunosuppression - better get those ppl vaccinated.

    HIV community?

The uncontrolled experiment is happening as we speak.

    no DouG?
  9. 2021-03-25 10:48 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.631
Just nuts. Simple question - why are we convinced this is _not_ happening in some animal reservoir?
  10. 2021-03-25 10:50 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.631
    Why would it?
  11. 2021-03-25 10:51 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.631
It would be multiple lineages going into animal reservoirs and then popping back out again.
  12. 2021-03-25 10:52 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.631
Perhaps it is happening in HIV infected individuals?
  13. 2021-03-25 10:57 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.631
I agree - unlikely. However, better vaccinate Noodle and Turbo just in case.
  14. 2021-03-25 10:59 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.631
But yeah - untreated HIV infection seems like it would make a person a perfect incubator to generate variants.
  15. 2021-03-25 11:42 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.631
I agree that human infection (maybe HIV infected individuals / immunocompromised) makes the most sense, however, that new paper on VOCs being able to infect rodents... Could be a huge undiscovered reservoir hiding too- because we aren't really looking outside humans. But I agree - much less likely, although I think we should becareful not to dismiss the possibility.

Should look for SC2 antibodies in pets of C19 households - it shouldn't be too hard to find C19 households with cats, dogs and even ferrets [ferrets are surprisingly popular]. Just contact some vets.

WTF!!!??? With Jamie - of all people? Really?
  19. 2021-03-25 12:39 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.632
Yes - this is shit - unlikely to have much if any real pushback in the 60min report I'm guessing - He'll be pushing the fact that the Chinese military is Shi's puppet master.

They typically have good people on - how he is even remotely relevant to this discussion, I don't understand.

Here's a much higher resolution map of the Huanan seafood market. [shared file(s): image.png]

Now the update is that the WHO report is coming out next week.
  23. 2021-03-25 13:10 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.632
At least Metzl's missing the opportunity to bash the actual report on 60min.
  24. 2021-03-25 13:10 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.632
I think I can map the samples onto the map with a little help.
  25. 2021-03-25 13:11 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.632
Getting a translation on that map and Ct values would be great
  26. 2021-03-25 13:18 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.632
well maybe no ct values but we know which samples generated positive sequences - i guess of pcr products and which gave genomes at least partial by ngs. it's a pretty good surrogate. i'll try to get Shitao to help me before cobtoday.

@Robert Garry more unforced errors - it's how you lose a tennis match as i understand it.
  28. 2021-03-25 13:27 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.632
There's clearly clustering of cases in some of the stalls - I'd like to know that those held raccoon dogs and/orcivets... Or pangolins. Or whatever.
  29. 2021-03-25 13:33 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.633
My guess is that's what Daszak's tiling project is trying to show along with Eddie's smoking raccoon dog pics. "Thirty-one of the 33 positive samples were collected from the western zone of the market, where booths of wildlife trading concentrated. The result suggests that the novel coronavirus outbreak is highly relevant to the trading of the wild animals, experts said. The successful isolation of the novel coronavirus further substantiates that the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market contains a large quantity of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), according to the experts."

Maybe get the Ct values too while you're at it

All we can do now is wait for the WHO report - that will change the debate. I doubt George will say much of interest.

Zhang just told me that the Director of his institute in Shanghai just got the boot for protecting him last year. The Ministry of Health are keen for vengeance.
