Kristian was calling for this long ago - time has come. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/07/opinion/trump-25th-amendment-impeachment.html. Impeachment and a lifetime ban from office also a good idea https://metro.co.uk/2021/01/06/us-representatives-draw-up-plans-to-impeach-and-oust-donald-trump-after-us-capitol-riots-13861561/

Reassuring to know he's got the nuclear codes.

I bet Pence is not adverse to the idea of being Prez for a couple of weeks. Come out looking a little bit sane. Make agraceful handover.

When do the new Senators take their seats?
  5. 2021-01-07 11:26 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.363
Imagine that - Pence being the sane guy... I suspect he might already be in charge - I'm somewhat hopeful that they have made it clear to Trump that if he makes any of his crazy moves, they'll immediately invoke the 25th. We'll see - I don't exactly have a lot of trust in the system...

He could get to be President 46 and be called Mr President for the rest of his life
  7. 2021-01-07 11:34 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.363
He doesn't need the support of trump nutters for any future presidential bid (he must realise he is not going to get anywhere with that).
  8. 2021-01-07 11:34 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.363
    I'd take it
  9. 2021-01-07 11:34 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.363
I would do it in a shot.

Harris has to be sworn in on Jan 20 before Dems will have the majority. Just heard that Elaine Cho, who is Mitch'swife just resigned. That's either a sign they are going to go with the 25th or a sign against depending on which way you think Cho might have weighed in. Trust me Trump is weighing some even more crazy shit.
  11. 2021-01-07 11:34 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.363
    (actually, I wouldn't)

"Trust me Trump is weighing some even more crazy shit". Great, thanks Bob - not only am I completely freaked outby B.1.1.7, now I'm worried about a war with Iran... (and I trust you have sources to make that statement...). There's no question he's gotta go - 100%.
  13. 2021-01-07 11:37 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.364
Off the record (although you can find them on GISAID) we now have two independent instances of E484K on top of the B.1.1.7 constellation

This is trumps cabinet. It takes 8 to invoke the 25th unless another one resigns. Not sure that I see 8 sane names onthe list. Congress can do as well, right?
  16. 2021-01-07 11:40 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.364
@Andrew Rambaut That's not good for all the reasons discussed...
  17. 2021-01-07 11:40 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.364
Pence could then give them all pardons
  18. 2021-01-07 11:40 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.364
@Andrew Rambaut Shit. Good to know. I don't know what the heck is happening with this virus at the moment - it was pretty quiet evolutionarily speaking for a while... ANY data from neut studies?
  19. 2021-01-07 11:40 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.365
Obviously Trump could offer them that not to too

@Andrew Rambaut Okay, good - I really would like to see that data. I'm freaked out enough as it is, just wondering ifI need to take that and 2x...
  24. 2021-01-07 11:42 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.365
@Andrew Rambaut There have been quite a few spontaneous E484Ks over the months so it may just be coincidence. I have heard a bit about the cases and there is nothing particular about them.
  25. 2021-01-07 11:43 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.365
@Andrew Rambaut I doubt it'll add to the transmission phenotype - but I'm certainly not reassured by Jesse's study yesterday
  26. 2021-01-07 11:43 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.365
@Andrew Rambaut By the way - E484K is called 'Erik' in our terminology but I think it probably should be 'Eeek'
  27. 2021-01-07 11:43 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.365
@Andrew Rambaut Haha, I like Eeek - definitely has to be Eeek!
  28. 2021-01-07 11:44 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.365
Yes Congress could do it, but Mitch would have to agree.
  29. 2021-01-07 11:45 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.365
Interesting to speculate what his move would be - would he imagine another republican in the trump mould for 2024? In which case he would want to keep the nutters on side
  30. 2021-01-07 11:46 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.366
If he agrees to impeach then it would signal the trump project is dead

Hawley and Cruz are making the big try the Trump base.
  33. 2021-01-07 11:49 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.366
"My money would be on keeping the options open and not doing anything for 2 weeks" - I'm worried this is how it's going to go as well - American Inaction. It's a thing.I think Mitch would sign on.
  34. 2021-01-07 11:50 Andrew Rambaut open PDF p.366
@Robert Garry Yes so it depends if Mitch thinks they are viable

@Robert Garry Amazing how much power resides in one person and how the power is mainly through control of a diary.
  38. 2021-01-07 12:41 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.366
@Andrew Rambaut Someone needs to take some combo of Doug, Nelly and Erik and probably a few other siblings and make vaccines and monoclonals that work against them.
  39. 2021-01-07 12:48 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.366
@Andrew Rambaut I assume - bloody hope! - Pfizer and Moderna already have these cloned and in animals...
  40. 2021-01-07 12:59 Robert F. Garry open PDF p.366
@Andrew Rambaut I know, but current consensus [Bloom, Rasmussen, even Fauci but he's always cagey] is that the existing vaccines will induce "polyclonal" immunity that will protect against viruses with just a few mutations. Iwould say that was true, BUT Nelly and Erik sure look like immune escape variants not to mention K417N and the NTD mutants. IMO not too soon to start tuning up v2 of those vaccines. I would not assume this has started.
  41. 2021-01-07 13:02 Kristian G. Andersen open PDF p.367
@Andrew Rambaut I hope they're correct that the vaccines will work just fine - I'm certainly less confident making such statements and unwilling to speculate until I have seen some of the UK neut data.
