He was originally recruited by Bill Hamilton recruited because he was hardy (a forest fire-fighter in BC) and could speak a bit of french. Bill was pretty convinced but believed it could and should be tested (by testing the chimps local to the vaccine camp). During the trip he had pretty much convinced Bill that it wasn't correct (because we had been building trees and the common ancestor was way earlier). But then Bill died and Hooper basically wrote Bill's part. The problem is that it can be tested in the same way he tested the OPV hypothesis - by going out and finding it in the animals. Obviously they may have been but there is no evidence of one so they are essentially libelling people.
