[2021-02-01 19:14:02] [Robert Garry] Interesting - The notion of one bat infecting the others did cross my mind. [2021-02-02 12:49:25] [Kristian Andersen] @Andrew Rambaut - added a few more names to this slide. Are these the (not really) "official" names you guys came up with? A lot up people really liked that slide, but I made a few mistakes, so want to update it (and also credit your team for the names - since that's coming up A LOT). [shared file(s): Screen Shot 2021-02-02 at 12.48.02.png] [2021-02-02 13:01:11] [Robert Garry] When Pooh becomes PooR - I think PooR FranCiS should be the name. (OK It could be PeteR but more bland). [2021-02-02 13:03:39] [Andrew Rambaut] So Leif isn't fixed in B.1.351 (it comes up secondarily, as does Karen). Leif also appears in B.1.1.7 and is quite prevalent. [2021-02-02 13:04:28] [Andrew Rambaut] Plus all three have the deletion in nsp6 (which has therefore got to mean something) [2021-02-02 13:05:04] [Andrew Rambaut] E484K is actually called Erik (I checked with Erik Volz - he is quite pleased). [2021-02-02 13:10:38] [Kristian Andersen] Yeah, I noticed those weren't fixed - which is interesting. Same for many of the others. WHY CAN'T THIS BE SIMPLE!! Okay, I'll rename Eeek to Erik :disappointed: I do wonder what's going on in nsp6. Sure, could be functional, but could also just be e.g., a recombination hotspot that tends to obtain an indel during chronic infections. Such a weird virus. [2021-02-02 13:11:53] [Kristian Andersen] I so want a BoB mutation, but, well, I guess I can't have that. I'm please K417N ended up being Karen - I don't need to be part of this game.... :man_in_business_suit_levitating: [2021-02-02 13:23:02] [Robert Garry] No wait K417N needs to be KristiaN. And, surely somewhere there must be a synonymous mutation in a Glutamic acid codon. GAA <-> GAG. That would of course be EddiE. [2021-02-02 13:38:33] [Eddie Holmes] I'll change my name to EddY [2021-02-02 15:16:15] [Robert Garry] AndreW mutations would be among the rarest of all. You might ask why. Except for Methionine [it's special too] Tryptophan is the only aa with a single codon: UGG. For AndreW - You need to change the first two bases of an Alanine codon GCU, GCC, GCA, or GCG and generally all three. But, you really need to want to put in the tryptophan codon UGG because close relatives UAG and UGA are stop codons. Stop codons in viral proteins are bad. If that region mutates "slightly" it's a stop and a dead virus. That's what makes this sequence: WPWYIW which
