@Kristian Andersen In avian flu it is appears when the virus enters high density chicken flocks (i.e., from wild populations). For CoV I can imagine it being selected for in farmed animals. I doubt it was selected for in humans but that is just a hunch. Once in humans, selection is maintaining it against a within host tendency to loose it (i.e., the deletion papers).
