Attached is the program for the visit, outlining the agenda for the roundtable discussion. The topics are based on conversations with staff from the Global Health Program at the BMGF. I had an opportunity to review the agenda briefly with Bill at the Lasker Awards ceremony (where he and Melinda received the Lakser~Bloomberg award) last week. He is very much looking forward to the discussion. Based on Bill's preferences, we are organizing the roundtable as a conversation, rather than series of presentations. In order to make best use of available time, I have identified lead discussants for each agenda topic. I ask that you comment briefly, not to exceed 3 minutes, on one or several select scientific challenges of relevance to the BMGF: 1) the state of current knowledge and 2) the important questions to resolve. The comments would be intended to seed discussion. Unless you have compelling reasons to include powerpoints, I would suggest avoiding those for this informal conversation. I will try to ensure we cover as much of the agenda as feasible in the time available, while keeping flexible and responsive to Bill's interests and the flow of discussion. Could I also ask lead discussants to confer with colleagues identified under their area, to discuss how to share the time allocated to introduce topics? Given Bill's extensive knowledge in global health R&D and scientific savvy, this format should work well and allow us to relate the diverse scope of exciting science surrounding global health. Bill will be joined at the roundtable by Chris Wilson, Director of the Global Health Discovery & Translational Sciences program (and a member of the ACD), and Kathy Young, Senior Project Manager for Strategic Planning and Engagement in Bill's office. Their bios area attached. We are delighted and honored that Eric Goosby (a former Barmes Lecturer) will join the roundtable. I am asking Eric to comment on the NIH/PEPFAR partnership in implementation science. We will include a working lunch as part of the roundtable discussion Details on the lunch are forthcoming. Prior to the discussion, we also will send a background summary of current IC (and FNIH) activities with the Gates Foundation.
