Chinese Speakers included Zhong Nanshan, Wang Chen, Gao Fu Had nice conversation with the MLB Players Association with Tony Clark (Exec Director), Bruce Meyer (Senior Director, Collective Bargaining and Legal), Ian Penny (General Counsel), Kevin Slowey (Director Player Services), Matthew Nessbaum (Deputy General Counsel), Robert Lenaghan (Assistant General Counsel) and Max Scherzer (member, Exec. Comm.). They asked great questions about vaccines. I emphasized that I did not want to get in the middle of a dispute between MLB and players regarding when to start the season. They understood perfectly. I had some nice back and forth with Max Scherzer. February 5, 2021 - Global USA - Had terrific conversation today with Bob Cousy. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) had called me a couple of weeks ago saying that Bob Cousy would love to connect with me by phone, Joe is a good friend of Cousy's. I called Bob's cell phone and we spent 20 minutes chatting about all kinds of things. He has a great sense of humor. He is disturbed by the devisiveness in our society (similar to my concern). He spoke about his being 92 years old and that he body in "falling apart" despite the fact that he has "all my smarts". He is a rally charming guy. We developed a great rapport on the phone. Note that he came to my lecture at Holy Cross a few years ago and we had dinner together. Their data look fairly good for treatment of early disease to prevent hospitalization and PEP • Got call from Mike Osterholm trying to convince me to go with his concern/recommendation that we go with1st doses to as many people as possible given the fact that B.1.1.7 (UK) may become dominant in the USA and increase cases/hospitalization. This is a difficult problem sine we only have data for prime/boost with mRNA vaccines.

CDC starting to do practical things that I have actually been pushing for some time. For example: Wearing 2 masks could be better than just one. They did a dummy study and showed that a cloth mask over a surgical mask actually gives a more complete fit and keeps out aerosols. Another example is that people who are vaccinated do not need to go into quarantine after exposure to a documented COVID-19 case. N -- 27,200,000/474,000 POTUS Biden visit to NIH. Biden visited the NIAID VRC today at 3:30 PM on a sleety and snowy day. It was a great visit. I presented to him the history of the VRC and the importance of the work that Barney Graham has done with the stabilized spike protein. We brought Biden into the room where the experiments were done and Barney and Kizzy Corbet presented to him. He was accompanied by Jeff Zients. We then went to Natcher Auditorium where he addressed (virtually) the NIH community with a great speech in which he called out Francis and I multiple times.
