Had zoom call with Rob Manfred (Commissioner of MLB) and Dan Halem (Deputy Commissioner). They want to delay opening Spring training from February 17 to March17 and have a comparable delay in opening day. They want to do this since they feel (rightly so) that the decreases in cases will be even more pronounced with an additional month and they will be able to get more of the umpires and players vaccinated with the delay. Of note, Tom Frieden spoke with the MLB Players Association and the players want to start earlier since it affects their salaries. Now the Players want to speak with me. Got call tonight from Mayor Bill Di Blasio very concerned that the supply of vaccine for NYC is no where near meeting demand. Move to donate this to RSA to vaccinate their HCWs. RSA has been pleading with the USA to help them get vaccines since they are being ravaged by the B.1.351 variant. Phone call last night with David Kessler, Beth Cameron/Hilary Marston (NSC), me and Cliff Lane to figure out a mechanism to get this to them since it is only clinical trial grade. And we want to avoid the optics that we are either a) giving away vaccine meant for USA to RSA or b) we are "experimenting" on black Africans. • Gave one of several plenary addresses at a Brookings -Tsinghua University Roundtable of US-China Collaboration on COVID-19. Comm.). They asked great questions about vaccines. I emphasized that I did not want to get in the middle of a dispute between MLB and players regarding when to start the season. February 5, 2021 - Global USA - Had terrific conversation today with Bob Cousy. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) had called me a couple of weeks ago saying that Bob Cousy would love to connect with me by phone, Joe is a good friend of Cousy's. I called Bob's cell phone and we spent 20 minutes chatting about all kinds of things. He has a great sense of humor. He is disturbed by the devisiveness in our society (similar to my concern). He spoke about his being 92 years old and that he body in "falling apart" despite the fact that he has "all my smarts". He is a rally charming guy. We developed a great rapport on the phone. Note that he came to my lecture at Holy Cross a few years ago and we had dinner together. Their data look fairly good for treatment of early disease to prevent hospitalization and PEP • Got call from Mike Osterholm trying to convince me to go with his concern/recommendation that we go with1st doses to as many people as possible given the fact that B.1.1.7 (UK) may become dominant in the USA and increase cases/hospitalization. This is a difficult problem sine we only have data for prime/boost with mRNA vaccines.
