Finally straightened it out and it is "doses" not "people". Press are starting in aready in first criticizing that the goal is too lofty and now they are saying that the bar is tyoo low since we are already getting 800K per day. A lot of discussion about the RSA and UK variants and the potential effect on mAbs and importantly vaccines. Thus far, even though the mutants diminish somewhat the efficacy of the vaccines, the antibody response of the vaccine is still within the cushion of efficacy. Recent data indicate that the UK strain is also increased in virulence as well as transmissibility. Had zoom call with Rob Manfred (Commissioner of MLB) and Dan Halem (Deputy Commissioner). They want to delay opening Spring training from February 17 to March17 and have a comparable delay in opening day. They want to do this since they feel (rightly so) that the decreases in cases will be even more pronounced with an additional month and they will be able to get more of the umpires and players vaccinated with the delay. Of note, Tom Frieden spoke with the MLB Players Association and the players want to start earlier since it affects their salaries. Now the Players want to speak with me. February 1, 2021 - Global - 102,600,000/2,200,000; USA -26,000,000/440,000 Had usual MWF Press conference by Zoom Had discussion with the team (+John Mascola) about how best to utilize the J & J product (Ad26). There will be a messaging issue about 72% versus 94-95%. We cannot designate it for any specific group for that reason and so we decided to just out it in the mix with the other vaccines and have people make their choice based mostly on 1 dose vs 2 doses. Got call tonight from Mayor Bill Di Blasio very concerned that the supply of vaccine for NYC is no where near meeting demand. He is begging me to check with WH and see if anything can be done - DPA or some other mechanism. I will speak with David Kessler about this. Bill DiBlasio called me back and I explained to him that I had spoken to David Kessler about the Supply-demand issue with the vaccines and that there really was no solution. It is too late to invoke the DPA to have other factories make mRNA vaccine. By the time they gear up, there will be enough vaccine from multiple companies to vaccinate the entire country. February 4, 2021 - Global - 104,000,000/2,3200,000; USA - 26,400,000/449,000 Discussions last night and prior evenings regarding the use of the excess J & J vaccine of clinical trial grade. Move to donate this to RSA to vaccinate their HCWs. RSA has been pleading with the USA to help them get vaccines since they are being ravaged by the B.1.351 variant. Phone call last night with David Kessler, Beth Cameron/Hilary Marston (NSC), me and Cliff Lane to figure out a mechanism to get this to them since it is only clinical trial grade. And we want to avoid the optics that we are either a) giving away vaccine meant for USA to RSA or b) we are "experimenting" on black Africans. • Gave one of several plenary addresses at a Brookings -Tsinghua University Roundtable of US-China Collaboration on COVID-19. Chinese Speakers included Zhong Nanshan, Wang Chen, Gao Fu Had nice conversation with the MLB Players Association with Tony Clark (Exec Director), Bruce Meyer (Senior Director, Collective Bargaining and Legal), Ian Penny (General Counsel), Kevin Slowey (Director Player Services), Matthew Nessbaum (Deputy General Counsel), Robert Lenaghan (Assistant General Counsel) and Max Scherzer (member, Exec. Comm.). They asked great questions about vaccines. I emphasized that I did not want to get in the middle of a dispute between MLB and players regarding when to start the season. They understood perfectly. I had some nice back and forth with Max Scherzer.
