Topics
Natural origin / zoonotic spillover
Well, that's natural origin process that either occurs through nature or natural evolutionary processes that might occur in cell cultures. They're really hard to tell apart.

I don't recall. I actually looked at all my records and I can't find the reason why I was on the call.
  2. 2026-04-10 09:00 Christina Salazar open
Do you recall what was discussed on the call?
  3. 2026-04-10 09:00 Ralph S. Baric open
Yeah. The purpose of the call was to talk about origins and potential origins. Most of the discussion was led by the evolutionary biologists, who were actually probably the most key, important people in the room. And what they said was that they thought it was DC.Scheduling@LexitasLegal.com extremely unlikely that there was any evidence of genetic engineering of the virus, but that they had trouble distinguishing between natural evolutionary processes in cell culture versus animals. And that became sort of the consensus, that it evolved by natural evolutionary processes.
  4. 2026-04-10 09:00 Christina Salazar open
And then what else did they discuss. Natural origin, that it evolved naturally?
  5. 2026-04-10 09:00 Ralph S. Baric
Well, that's natural origin process that either occurs through nature or natural evolutionary processes that might occur in cell cultures. They're really hard to tell apart.
  6. 2026-04-10 09:00 Christina Salazar open
I'm not a scientist, so natural origin, to me genetically engineered or accidental release? And correct me.
  7. 2026-04-10 09:00 Ralph S. Baric open
So accidental release would have fallen under the category of natural evolutionary processes in cell culture.
  8. 2026-04-10 09:00 Christina Salazar open
That could have been adapted in the lab.
  9. 2026-04-10 09:00 Ralph S. Baric open
    That's correct.
