    @Andrew Rambaut Actually "fun" to read those early posts and this document - the first version of this which appears to have been Feb 1, but maybe a version history wouls be interesting to look at. Pretty intense actually ----but I believe that the two factors that flipped the thinking were the mutational pattern in the RBD showing a likely natural pathway and the plethora of natural FCS and high variability at the S1/S2 junction.     @Andrew Rambaut Yeah, I was looking through the version history recently - it's pretty interesting. We switched away from "engineering" quite a bit faster than I remembered - I think one of the main reasons being the comments from Ron, Marion, and Christian. And yes, a much closer look at all the available data.
