As I said in my first email to him - naive. [2021-05-15 19:04:44] [Eddie Holmes] And dumb [2021-05-15 19:06:38] [Kristian Andersen] Yeah. UnRealMan. [2021-05-15 19:21:26] [Eddie Holmes] Doc is coming on nicely. [2021-05-15 19:42:03] [Kristian Andersen] Yeah, this is good actually - have been wanting to gather all of this for a while, but it's good with a little nudge... I'll take some of the best hits and reply back to unRealman tomorrow. Kinda looking forward to that... [2021-05-15 19:44:03] [Eddie Holmes] Great! I'll take another look later. [2021-05-15 20:06:58] [Eddie Holmes] It's 'The Man in the White Suite'. Circumstantial evidence dooms a hated minority until a closer look at the evidence reveals the truth. A few loud voices initially lead the jury down the wrong path. The knife is the FCS which makes you Henry Fonda. [2021-05-16 02:09:17] [Andrew Rambaut] [thread - ID: 2021-05-15 18:57:48] @Kristian Andersen This to me is the real killer - a random sampling of bats in a few locations at a few times is not going to find it. And then you have to have the chance that that one makes it into a live culture. [2021-05-16 02:14:39] [Andrew Rambaut] The point about the unlikeliness of sampling the human transmissible virus by just sampling bats is totally key here. Sampling N bats taking them back to the lab and then exposing a few postdocs to each of the samples in turn is not going result in lab escape - vanishingly unlikely that SC2 was in the N bats in the first place (especially if they are from the same cave or area or time). The idea that 'lab escape' is plausible comes from the fact that 'escape' is plausible - it is plausible, it is 'lab capture' that isn't. [2021-05-16 02:17:56] [Eddie Holmes] Can you add that to Kristian's google doc - link above. It's coming on. [2021-05-16 06:55:40] [Kristian Andersen] Agreed, this is key. However, they'll counter - "yes, but they have previously managed to identify and culture bat viruses that bind to human ACE2"
