having to cancel the I hope this is instructive and would be happy to From: "Fauci, Anthony (NIH/NIAID) [E]" @niaid.nih.gov> To: NIAID OD AM @niaid.nih.gov> Subject: FW: Mr. Bill Gates visit and lecture rescheduled for Monday, December 2, 2013 Date: Tue, 05 Nov 2013 22:18:19 -0500 Importance: Normal Inline-Images: image001.png Let us discuss tomorrow and I will also separately discuss with Hillery Harvey. From: Harvey, Hillery (NIH/NIAID) [E] Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2013 11:20 AM To: NIAID OD AM Subject: FW: Mr. Bill Gates visit and lecture rescheduled for Monday, December 2, 2013 Additional guidance on Gates visit from Dr. Collins: Based on Bill's preferences, we are organizing the roundtable as a conversation, rather than series of presentations. In order to make best use of available time, I have identified lead discussants for each agenda topic. I ask that you comment briefly, not to exceed 3 minutes, on one or several select scientific challenges of relevance to the BMGF: 1) the state of current knowledge and 2) the important questions to resolve. The comments would be intended to seed discussion. Unless you have compelling reasons to include powerpoints, I would suggest avoiding those for this informal conversation. I will try to ensure we cover as much of the agenda as feasible in the time available, while keeping flexible and responsive to Bill's interests and the flow of discussion. Could I also ask lead discussants to confer with colleagues identified under their area, to discuss how to share the time allocated to introduce topics? Given Bill's extensive knowledge in global health R&D and scientific savvy, this format should work well and allow us to relate the diverse scope of exciting science surrounding global health. The one positive in having to cancel the event due to the shutdown, is the availability of Dr. Fauci to participate on the rescheduled date. With regards to the format of the roundtable discussion, below is the note that Dr. Collins sent to the IC Directors and Deputies participating in the roundtable, prior to the cancellation I hope this is instructive and would be happy to provide any additional background and clarifications. The costs of the catered lunch will be supported out of the representational fund - covering both the guests and IC Directors. Best,
