In 2004, NIAID established the Mali Service Center (MSC), which serves as the NIAID's
financial arm for intramural and extramural activities.
In 2006, the NIAID appointed an NIH staff member to serve as the Director of the
NIAID/NIH Mali office and overall manager of NIAID ICER activities in Mali.
NIAID's total investment in Mali in FY 12 was approximately $9.4 million.
Evolution of the ICER Mali
1. Research facilities
When the program was initiated in 1989, research facilities at the medical school were
virtually non-existent and research programs limited primarily to field based
entomological and epidemiological studies. Under the supervision of Drs. Toure and
Sakai, the NIH embarked on a major program of laboratory development. Initially,
existing laboratories and classrooms were renovated and equipped. Later, new facilities
were constructed. Construction was managed by either the US Embassy or the Office of
the Dean of the medical school. Over 20 new laboratories were constructed or renovated
and fully equipped.
The Mali ICER facilities are located in five buildings on the campus of ENMP, now
called the University of Sciences, Techniques, and Technologies of Bamako (USTTB).
The following is a summary of laboratories and facilities added as part of the NIH
program:
Medical Entomology Program
Molecular Entomology with 2 large insectaries
Cytogenetics
Molecular Ecology
GIS/Remote Sensing
Vector Proteomic
Vector Bioinformatics
Malaria Immunology
Malaria Pathogenesis
