b to show in 2 es (of London) came to my early years (1981-1984) when he was Director. He was gay, but closeted. KLarry Kramer outted him and said that his closet status prevented him from asking for more AIDS money. I succeeded Richard and immediately asked for more money. Jan 8, 2015 - Did a 1 hour interview of a prolife on me by Brian Lamb to show in 2 weeks on C-SPAN. Jan. 15, 2015 - Number of cases very low in Liberia. Surge in cases in Sierra leone starting to come down. Liberian vaccine trial getting ready to start at end of January, beginning of February. Cliff Lane in Liberia now. I will go within a few weeks (likely early February). Received award today at the Willard Hotel of 2014 Washingtonian of the Year from Washingtonian magazine. Seven other winners including Gerry Sigal and Arch Campbell. To White House tomorrow to update the "Deputies" on the upcoming vaccine trials in West Africa. Over past week terrible tragedy of terrorism in Paris with Jihadists murdering 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine offices. Today another thwarted terrorist attempt in Belgium. Europe on high alert. Jan. 16, 2016 - White House (EEOB - 374) meeting with Deputies chaired by Ron Klain. Subject matter was vaccine trials and if there is any change in approach now that infections are so low, particularly in Liberia. Also discussed indemnification, liability and compensation for trials. Also discussed the need (or not) for 46 hospitals to be "ready" to receive Ebola patients (see above). I have always been against this since, in my mind, most of the hospitals that have volunteered to be "Ebola treatment Units" in the USA are really after the government funds that go with it. The Deputies group was discussing reluctance to tell other hospitals that 46 is enough and we will not support any more. I made myself clear that we should just stop recruiting hospitals that we do not need and that could likely not be able to handle an Ebola patient if they had to. Also, met in the AM with Delegation from India ("Vijay) to discuss NIAID - India collaborations, particularly the Vaccine Action program (VAP), which has been onging for many years. and importantly, a delegation from Liberia and Sierra Leone. The deputy Minister of Sierra Leone (SL) is Dr. Madina Rahman. She definitely "gets it" about the advantage of a RCT and wants to have us conduct such a trial in SL. This is key, since SL is where all the infections are right now with very few in Liberia. I will hook her up with Cliff Lane who is on his way back to USA from Liberia. Jan. 17, 2015 - Writer and photographer from Financial Times (of London) came to my home today (Saturday) to do story on personal aspects of me. Jan. 20, 2015 - Visit to NIH of Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) of the Appriopriations Subcommittee. Accompanied by Rosa DeLauro, Nita Lowy, Andy Harris , Dent, Womack. I presented work on universal flu vaccine, Ebola, Antimicrobila resistance.
