December 19, 2014 - The puzzle of why Adrian Hill (and Jeremy Farrar) have been badmouthing the NIH/GSK approach of a high dose prime without the necessity of a boost. Adrian is reporting publicly that his 5x10e10 dose gives virtually no response and he needs an MVA boost. His assay is inadequate and he has been told that by Nancy Sullivan. In fact, when he assays with a proper assay he has an expectedly lower response than what we get at 1x10e11; however it is not 10x less that the animalprotective dose. We get a very adequate animal-protective dose at 1x10e11 and we say that this is the dose to give in an epidemic when you may not be able to give a boost. We definitely realize that for long term protection, we will need a boost; however, he says you need a boost for any protection even though he knows and is holding back the real data that disproves his point. Now we find out that he owns "intellectual property" for the prime-boost approach to an Ebola vaccine as opposed to a prime only. I consider this and him egregiously unethical. I will not make what he is doing public; however, he is really a bad person.

Dec. 20-29, 2014 -- Discharge to her parents' home in Northern Virginia. Apart from human interest stories, the press interest (TV, radio) in Ebola has disappeared. Relaxed Christmas with all 3 Fauci girls coming home for Christmas. Usual enjoyable Christmas eve birthday dinner at sister Denise's house. Chris's mother attended since she was alone for Christmas eve (Joanne Huskey usually takes care of her on Christmas Eve and Chris and Joanne share care of their mother on Christmas day). However, Joanne and Jim Huskey went to Guatemala for Christmas leaving their mother with Chris. Fc On Dec. 22, there was a mess-up at CDC since a worker took and Ebola specimen out of BSL-4 into BSL-2 without inactivating the specimen. Caused press attention when it was revealed on Dec. 24. Chris, I and the girls went for a 2 day (Dec. 26-28) trip and. rented a beautiful cabin in the Shenandoah and hiked together for 1.5 days (2 nights). Tom Frieden called me on my cell phone while I was on a long hike as he has done several times now when he is under fire. He knows that I always support him and he has written me nice e-mails telling me how much he values my friendship and how supportive I have been to him and CDC. He called this time because he wanted my take on what the damage of this mishap was since Secretary Burwell was quite annoyed and implied that CDC was "incompetent". I told him that this was a fluke, that the world will forget about it very quickly since the exposed person (CDC lab tech) almost certainly did not get infected), and that he should just let it go since the story has no legs. He was very appreciative of the conversation. Jan. 4 -- Influenza season looking bad with 67% mismatch of the H3N2 thast is circulating and the vaccine H3N2. This year, unlike 2013-2014 (HIN1), is 99% H3N2. I appeared yesterday (Jan. 3) on CNN with Poppy Harlow discussing flu and today on ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulos (interviewed by Martha Raddetz).

Jan. 6, 2015 -- Former NIAID Director and my predecessor, Dr. Richard Krause, dies at age 90. He was a scholarly man, a bit stiff in the "old school" Rockefeller University tradition, but he meant well. He was sorely criticized by the AIDS activist community for his lack of aggressive action in his not asking for new money for AIDS during the Al7 b to show in 2 es (of London) came to my early years (1981-1984) when he was Director. He was gay, but closeted. KLarry Kramer outted him and said that his closet status prevented him from asking for more AIDS money. I succeeded Richard and immediately asked for more money.

Jan. 15, 2015 - Number of cases very low in Liberia. Surge in cases in Sierra leone starting to come down. Liberian vaccine trial getting ready to start at end of January, beginning of February. Cliff Lane in Liberia now. I will go within a few weeks (likely early February). Received award today at the Willard Hotel of 2014 Washingtonian of the Year from Washingtonian magazine. Seven other winners including Gerry Sigal and Arch Campbell. To White House tomorrow to update the "Deputies" on the upcoming vaccine trials in West Africa. Over past week terrible tragedy of terrorism in Paris with Jihadists murdering 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine offices. Today another thwarted terrorist attempt in Belgium. Europe on high alert.

Jan. 20, 2015 - Visit to NIH of Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) of the Appriopriations Subcommittee. Accompanied by Rosa DeLauro, Nita Lowy, Andy Harris , Dent, Womack. I presented work on universal flu vaccine, Ebola, Antimicrobila resistance. Then took them to VRC to show them around to Nancy Sullivan and Julie Ledgerwood. Rosa and Nita kept hugging and kissing me, congratulating me on my work. Big measles outbreak originating in Disneyland. Much press associated with it and cricizing the vaccine denialists. I have been on several shows (WTOP, etc.) In 2014 there have been 644 cases and 23 outbreaks.
