Thanks for all the efforts on this. It looks good. Two quick comments I would make are: 1- that the potential positive implications for neglected diseases seem to have somewhat fallen out. While I think we do not want to oversell that, it is a plus and a dual use and ties in with a lot of outside interest and our humanitarian goals. and 2- broad spectrum has a medical meaning that we need to keep in mind, as all are aware, but needs care w the nonscientists we are engaging here. I understand here we are talking about both multipathogen (e.g. broadly acting antimicrobials or, as in flu example, vaccines) and platform technologies that could be generalized to multiple pathogens or threats. Issues with focusing too much attention on "broad spectrum" in terms of broad activity may include the following - a) that such accomplishments may be difficult to achieve scientifically and b) that we will face the challenge we face with tiuse and uum that can commercially usable drugs, the tension between broad use leading to resistance development, vs.. preserving for resistance and MCM needs. Of interest, perhaps somewhat in between, and in some cases more realistic than truly broad spectrum, are interventions that may be dual or multi-use but not truly "broad spectrum" , such as an antibiotic that might be active both against terrorism threats and against specific resistant organisms in the health care setting. Or a radiation injury treatment that might be useful in cancer therapy, marrow transplantation and in radiation injury. I know this is what is intended by all of us but wanted to emphasize for discussions. One way to discuss for non-medical audiences might be that beyond a single only emergency use, dual use, multiuse and broad spectrum agents and platforms can be part of a more technologically advanced and strategic continuum that can increase economic incentives, US competitiveness, preparedness and health benefits.
