Dear Doug and Peter,
We're delighted you are helping to lead what no doubt will be a dynamic set of panel discussions on June 2. As you
know, this will be the fourth annual BMGF-NIH workshop to discuss progress of joint projects and opportunities for
cooperation, based on emerging scientific opportunities and public health developments. It will be the second that Bill
Gates has joined.
Attached is the current draft agenda. I have the immediate challenge of assembling the moving parts into a fixed, final
agenda, and would welcome your guidance. We plan to present Bill and Francis with a final agenda early next week.
May I ask the following, in developing a final draft:
Who should be listed as moderator, to open discussion and guide the conversation?
Does the agenda reflect the correct composition and order of panelists, as well as scientific topics?
I'm happy to incorporate your additions and corrections, including any descriptive bullets that help characterize the
session
As last year, we're hoping to ensure a conversational format for each panel, to allow for new ideas and collaborative
thinking to emerge, and to enable Bill to participate in the discussion. We therefore request that each panelist limit their
introductory remarks to 3 minutes, to enable at least half of the 45 minute session to constitute open discussion, led by
the moderator, with participation from the panelists, as well as relevant experts in the audience. We ask that you use
PowerPoint only when absolutely necessary, such as to present a point that cannot be made verbally. Should you wish
for certain graph, charts, or tables to be available as background for your panel, please send these along to me. I'll make
sure they are available to all attendees.

Finally, we would like to request that the moderators be sure to include a few minutes at the end of the panel to allow Bill
to make any final comments or ask any final questions, should he choose.
Please advise if I can answer any questions Thank you for your preparations and guidance. I will be sending along a full
list of attendees and additional background when available.
