Nov. 12, 2022 Jeff Zients 56th birthday. I dropped off a signed copy of Harrison's at his house. An historically memorable day at the National Portrait Gallery. A Gala event was held tonight honoring the inductees to the National Portrait Gallery. It was the highest level of AAA list you could imagine in Washington DC. There was a red carpet entry to the gallery which resembled the red carpet entry into the Academy Awards with multiple TV and radio and print interviews as you walk along the red carpet before you get to the main place where photographs were taken. It started off as a very wamt night for November 12 at 75 F and clear sky, but by the end of the night and into tomorrow morning it got much colder. It was very clear that the extraordinary talent and unique approach that Hugo took captivated the audience of more than 750 people at this gala opening and dinner affair. I was the first awardee who was recognized, being introduced by David Rubenstein. I received a prolonged standing ovation from the crowd (as did others). David gave his usual tongue-in-cheek introduction of me telling the story of how he offered me a "higher calling' in private equity 12 years ago. I had wonderful conversation with other awaredees and others who expressed sincere appreciation of what I have done over more than 50 years. Of particular note were conversations with Marian Wright Edelman who called me "her hero and a true national treasure". Also, Jose Andres (he wants to invite me to a private dinner at his home) Clive Davis, Ava DuVernay and Isabel Wilkerson, and Venus Williams (not so much Serena) were very warm towards me. It was an extraordinary affair. In the middle of it, Dan Diamond from the Washington Post texted me that the GOP did not take the Senate and so Rand Paul will not have the opportunity to harass me with senate oversight hearings. We were invited to go across the street by Jose to his restaurant Zaytinya for after hours champagne. He quickly stopped there but Jose had not arrived and so we left a message of greeting to him and took off since it was already 11:50 PM. A truly AMAZING evening!! Nov. 13, 2022 (Sunday) Mark Dybul texted me to alert me that Mike Gerson was fading quickly and was in Georgetown Hospital waiting for Hospice. Bles Building, 4th Floor, Room 24. It was very sad to see. Mike was in dire straits literally on his last few hours to few days. He recognized me and was obviously very glad to see me. We had a brief conversation I told them how important he was to me and to the rest of the world and he said that he truly appreciated that. A truly great man will soon leave us. Was briefed today by the Moderna team led by Steve Hoge on the latest data of their bivalent BA4/5 boost. The data look really very good and it is clear that the updated booster performs very well and better than the ancestral booster across the board in inducing antibodies against BA 4/5 and all of the sub variants of omicron including BQ.1.1. This is very good news for the upcoming winter. However, there is still very little uptake of this updated booster by the general public. There is this complacency that the pandemic is over and the confusion about why we need to continually get updated boosts because of the combination of appearance of new variants together with the lack of durability of response to either vaccine or infection. I was honored at the home of the French Ambassador to the United States (2221 Kalorama Road, NW) where I received the Pasteur Medal commemorating the bicentenary of Louis Pasteur's birth in 1822. Only a dozen medals are given this year being awarded to leading scientists, benefactors, philanthropists, and representatives of several countries. The stock of metals will be exhausted by the end of 2022 and no other metals will be minted. It was very much of a love fest with a very nice presentation of the metal to me by doctor Stewart Cole who is the Director of the Pasteur. Ambassador Philippe Etienne was very gracious and a very nice person. They sang my praises and we had a very elegant dinner. Very rainy and cold night. Janet Tobias was there. Nov. 19, 2022 Rochelle called me up this morning and arranged for a zoom at 10:30 AM to discuss her side of the story of why she wants to simplify the boosting regimen for children less than five and six years old for the Moderna and Pfizer boost. There is a tension between her/CDC and Peter Marks and Larry Horowitz (FDA) regarding whether or not the younger children should all get the bivalent boost or have them finish their primary regimens with the ancestral strain vaccine. Peter and Larry had both called me up previously (couple of nights ago) making it look like the CDC was holding back on wanting to give the most updated boost to the children. Yet, when Rochelle explained this to me this morning it became clear that it is a much more complicated situation than Peter and Larry described to me by phone a couple of nights ago. Ultimately, in January all children of all ages will get a unified vaccine either for the primary series or the boost and that will be the bivalent BA.4/5. Rochelle explained that to insert that bivalent boost into the already complicated regimen for the small fraction of children who have started on their primary series would create an enormous amount of confusion for pediatricians. I tend to side now with Rochelle even though when Peter and Larry explained that in the simplified form it seemed that they were making sense. However, according to Rochelle's explanation I believe she is correct. We will all sort this out on a zoom call with HHS tomorrow (Sunday) evening. It involved: me, Rochelle, Robbie Goldstein, Peter Marks, Rob Califf, Dawn O'Connell, Vivek Murthy, Larry Tabak, among others. We all agreed that this was a close call and both sides have a good point. The important issues is that this involved only about 5% of the eligible children since the other 95% have not yet received their primary vaccination and those are truly the vulnerable ones if we get a winter surge. At the end of January, 2023, the VRPAC will meet to recommend that going forward all vaccinations (primary series and boosters) will be the BA.4/5 bivalent and so this will be a moot point. The question still remains unsettled as to give the children the best boost now even though it logistically will be difficult for the pediatricians since they will have multiple (11) different products in their offices from Moderna + Pfizer) or wait until we have a uniform boost for everyone at the end of January. No firm decision was made. FDA will try to push the date for VRPAC closer to close the gap.
