The Northern Plains, Upper Mid-West, Rocky Mountain States and Heartland continue to improve decreasing test positivity, cases, hospitalizations. Strong vigilance messaging should continue to ensure decline through the upcoming Holiday season. 2. The Coasts (80% of America's population) are now driving the increasing cases, hospitalizations and soon deaths. The rate of rise is deeply concerning as it is similar to the Northern Plain States. New strain of virus - B.1.1.1.7 arising in UK with concern that it is spreading much faster that other strains. Some EU countries are banning flights from UK. Probably an overreaction since there is no evidence that the strain is more virulent or that it escapes vaccineinduced immunity. We (VRC/NIAID) will start examining for these issues. PRESS: Despite the approval of Moderna vaccine a few days ago, I was not allowed on any Sunday TV shows. FOX and MTP wanted me. December 21, 2020 Global USA Much concern and discussion about the mutant virus (see above) that is in UK and South Africa. I will be speaking with the Biden people about this today. 1. The Northern Plains, Upper Mid-West, Rocky Mountain States and Heartland continue to _-- 18,000,000/319,000 improve decreasing test positivity, cases, hospitalizations. Strong vigilance messaging should continue to ensure decline through the upcoming Holiday season. 2. The Coasts (80% of the population) are now driving the increasing cases, hospitalizations and soon deaths. The rate of rise is concerning, however due to aggressive mitigation there is a more rapid stabilization of cases then we saw in the Fall with the center of the country which should lead to an earlier peak if the Holiday Season surge can be blunted. Had Zoom call with Biden. Also, present were Ron Klain, Jeff Zientz, Rochelle Walensky; Natalie Quillian; Vivek Murthy. Discussion centered around: 1) state of the outbreak (me); 2) Mutants from UK (me); 3) vaccine rollout (Vivek). I strongly recommended not banning travel from UK. Ron Klain and Biden were not so sure. Ron suggested that we might have a 10 day ban over the holidays. I pushed back and said that this would not help since the virus would come from other places. I suggested that we very explicitly state that we are watching this very carefully and are all over it. The potential effects of the mutation is : 1) increased transmissibility; 2) increased virulence; 3) evasion of protection from vaccine (and to some extent from mAb). All of these are testable. Relief bill in purgatory since he does not want to sign it because of disagreement about amount of relief ($600 versus $2000). Everyone had agreed to $600 even though the Dems wanted more. White House staff agreed to the bill. Sent to Trump for signature, except that now that he has finally looked at it, he wants the $2000 per person, which is what the Dems wanted to begin with, and the GOP objected to. And so now, he is bucking against his own GOP. In the meantime, people are starving without aid. Also, the USG might shut down since the Omnibus budget bill has not been signed either. Amidst all this, Trump is pardoning a large number of people (>40), almost all who were involved in the issues surrounding the probe of him and the impeachment matters. He also pardoned Gen. Flynn, Roger Stone, and Charles Kushner. Deb's daily report: Aggressive post Holiday testing of those who gathered and rapid utilization of Mab in those at highest risk for severe outcomes will be critical over the next 2-3 weeks to blunt the impact of Holiday gatherings.
