November 1, 2020 - Global - 45,900,000/1,200,000; USA - 9,110,000/230,000 Big ISSUE!! - Blockbuster situation in Washington Post in an interview that I gave on Friday evening to Josh Dawsey and Jasmeen Abutaleb. I spoke about the fact that cases were dramatically increasing throughout the country (see prior days above) and that we needed to do something different like doubling down on public health measures. I also strongly blasted Scott Atlas. In the article, much to my dismay, Dawsey (less than Abutaleb) wanted to keep the word "seriously in a passage that I thought was off the record, but he said that it was not (I am pissed at him). Here is the passage: Fauci said former vice president Joe Biden's campaign "is taking it seriously from a public health perspective." Trump, Fauci said, is "looking at it from a different perspective." He said that perspective was "the economy and reopening the country.". Also, in the article. Judd Deere blasted me saying I was being political: Judd Deere, a White House spokesman, offered blistering criticism of Fauci for his comments in a statement to The Washington Post on Saturday. Deere said Fauci "knows the risks [from the coronavirus] today are dramatically lower than they were only a few months ago." "It's unacceptable and breaking with all norms for Dr. Fauci, a senior member of the President's Coronavirus Task Force and someone who has praised President Trump's actions throughout this pandemic, to choose three days before an election to play politics," Deere said. "As a member of the Task Force, Dr. Fauci has a duty to express concerns or push for a change in strategy, but he's not done that, instead choosing to criticize the President in the media and make his political leanings known by praising the President's opponent -- exactly what the American people have come to expect from The Swamp." I thought that I was in big trouble. However, some interesting things happened. Alyssa Farah texted me at 7:00 AM on Sunday and said: I am so sorry that fool Scott Atlas keeps attacking you. I'm even more sorry I'm not in a better position of influence to see him out the door. I'm trying to make people see he's a disaster. I immediately called her up and explained that I was not pitting my support for Biden over the POTUS. She understood perfectly and said she totally supported me and thanked me for what I do. Then, at 9:30 AM, the POTUS called me from Air Force One. We had a 15 minute conversation where he did his usual rambling. He started by saying that I really need to be positive. "Tony, I really like you, and you know that, but what the fuck are you doing? You constantly drop bombs on me. Everybody wants me to fire you, but I am not going to fire you, you have too illustrious a career, but you have to be positive. The country cannot stay locked down. (I never said that we should lock down). You have got to give them hope. I like you but so many people, not only in the White House, but throughout the country hate you because of what you are doing. I am going to win this fucking election by a landslide. Just watch. I always did things my way. And I always win, no matter what all these other fucking people think. And that fucker Biden. He is so fucking stupid. You are 10 times smarter than he is. I am going to kick his fucking ass in this election. I will win by a landslide. Just wait and see. I will win Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, all the key states. Just wait and see. The smallest crowd that I had was 25,000 people. Biden had 5 people blowing their fucking horns in their cars. Tony, you have to be positive. I do not want to keep you off TV, but when you are out there, you have to be positive. (I tried to interject some words that I am being positive by telling people what they need to do to avoid infection - he heard none of it and just kept talking over me. He did not seem hostile, but he was just rambling). Then when he was finished, he said: "OK, Tony, I will see you in a couple of days. Take care". Although I do not think that I will be fired, I am not out of danger just yet. Another crazy thing. Scott Atlas did an interview from the White House with Russian Television blasting the response of the USA scientists (including me). CNN is jumping all over this. NJ, PA Slide S shows there is no improvement in any state except 2-3. Cases will continue to hit all time highs week over week because the core mitigation efforts and targeted testing for asymptomatic infection are not occurring resulting in continued and escalating community spread leading to increasing hospitalizations and fatalities, States have developed testing systems and contact tracing for symptomatic clients that may account for less than 50% of the community spread as sick individuals have less activity in the community. Those with such mild symptoms or asymptomatic remain in the community for their full infectious period accounting for more of the community spread. Strategic use of the Ag tests will be critical to contral the current surge. These mild and asymptomatic cases will require both sentinel surveillance of community populations (community college students, major industries, K-12 teachers etc) as well as routine testing of under 40 yo to find and isolate these contagious individuals, The sequence of events must stop with the initial silent spread with aggressive sentinel surveillance testing, Aggressive testing of the contagious but asymptomatic population with isolation effectively contained and mitigated spread prior to infection of the more vulnerable community members. Routine testing will be essential in multigenerational households especially in our Tribal Nations. One unified consistent messaging about masks, physical distancing and hand washing with profound limitation on indoor gatherings especially with family and friends is essential at this time point -- this is about empowerment Americans with the knowledge and data for decision making. Oct. 30, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. EDT Months before travel was hobbled by coronavirus fears, I was returning home one evening from Raleigh-Durham International Airport when I noticed a familiar figure at the gate -- slight, bespectacled, hair side-parted and gray. Anthony S. Fauci and I have spoken now and then over the years, and we began to chat. When it was time to board, it turned out our seats were adjacent. So, I was treated to vivid war stories about the arc of his medical and scientific work in infectious diseases, and about his interactions with a succession of presidents during the AIDS crisis. New York Times - 10/29/2020 - Thomas Kaplan: Mr. Biden has also signaled that Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, will have a prominent role in a Biden administration. The Biden campaign has said Dr. Fauci, the longtime head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, "will have full access to the Oval Office and an uncensored platform to speak directly to the American people -- whether delivering good news or bad." -- Thomas Kaplan and Abby Goodnough

Apparently, the Post called the White House to inform them of my "negative towards the WH" interview. Mark Meadows called Collins (supposedly he tried to contact me but told Francis I did not answer my phone. He likely called my office phone that I no longer answer). He yelled at Francis saying that he has not seen the article yet but he has heard that I solicited an interview with the Post and did so without clearance. Francis called me and ascertained that in fact they called me and I did get clearance. See below (Sunday).

Apparently, the Secretary is under the impression (someone related this to him) that I initiated the interview with the Washington Post that is now so controversial. That is categorically incorrect and I have proof of that. The e-mail below indicate that the reporter Josh Dawsey reached out to me for an interview (e-mail below dated October 29, 2020 at 11:48 AM). I did what I always do and requested clearance. The e-mails below show that this occurred and I was cleared to speak with him. I would like very much to clear up this misunderstanding that I reached out to the reporter, which I absolutely did not. Please read the e-mail chain from bottom up. Many thanks. Best regards, Tony

If Trump does succeed in silencing Fauci somehow, it would come at a particularly precarious time for America. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.Frankie Alduino / Redux Pictures Fauci has spent the past few months speaking up about the stark realities of the pandemic -- honesty that is out of step with the White House's messaging and which seems to have resulted in his being sidelined. But Fauci's true courage and wisdom are most evident in how he has managed to strike a difficult balance: avoiding overt political attacks while still speaking truth to power. By walking this very tricky line, Fauci has probably avoided getting kicked off the coronavirus task force, ensuring that he could continue working from within the administration. This couldn't have been easy. I don't think the Trump administration realizes how much this unassuming and kind man embodies scientific excellence. But he's also got backup. There is a legion of citizen scientists, public health experts and medical workers who aren't giving up. Silencing one man, even a giant in the field of infectious diseases, won't silence those in our field. For months, efforts like the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard, the COVID Tracking Project and others have been providing the kinds of critical intelligence that should have been coming directly from the CDC. Over the last few months, our professional societies have started to become vocal advocates for evidence-based action, calling out this administration's deceptive and false claims. Longstanding and revered scientific publications have come out against Trump for his lack of leadership and respect for science.
