Hello Gretchen-- In discussing Dr. Fauci's preparation for his role in Mr. Gates' visit December and: several questions arose regarding the agenda discussion on HIV, malaria, and TB: e What is the general discussion format? e.g., opening slides or comments followed by organic discussion? e For the 11:45am-1pm agenda items, how much time is allotted for each? For the lead discussant's opening comments? e Should Dr. Fauci plan to use slides? And any other information on how Dr. Collins envisions this roundtable/working lunch would be helpful. Many thanks for your help! Best wishes, Hillery fx naid.nih.gov Disclaimer: The inform: 2 informatic fe it from ailbox or nand not expr Nation NIAID by one

Hi Hillery, Sorry to be late in responding. We will actually be re-working the agenda to have the media briefing at the end of the day's agenda so Mr. Gates will have the opportunity to hear from Senior Leadership and be better prepared for questions from the media. I do not believe that we were intending for ICD to use slides, but rather have an open dialogue with Mr. Gates. Given the time allotted, it would appear that each topic would have between 12 and 15 minutes, and I imagine that the opening comments for each would be up to the lead discussant. I have cc'd Rob Eiss here on this e-mail as he has been working on the format and can relay any ideas that he has received from Dr. Collins. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you need anything further. Rob and I are hoping to hear from remaining ICD before the end of the week to pin down a more accurate agenda. Best wishes, Gretchen

Inline-Images: image001.png Hi Hillery, Absolutely, that was our intention since both of the lab visits involve NIAID. The one positive in having to cancel the event due to the shutdown, is the availability of Dr. Fauci to participate on the rescheduled date. With regards to the format of the roundtable discussion, below is the note that Dr. Collins sent to the IC Directors and Deputies participating in the roundtable, prior to the cancellation I hope this is instructive and would be happy to provide any additional background and clarifications. The costs of the catered lunch will be supported out of the representational fund - covering both the guests and IC Directors. Best,

Inline-Images: image001.png Additional guidance on Gates visit from Dr. Collins: Based on Bill's preferences, we are organizing the roundtable as a conversation, rather than series of presentations. In order to make best use of available time, I have identified lead discussants for each agenda topic. I ask that you comment briefly, not to exceed 3 minutes, on one or several select scientific challenges of relevance to the BMGF: 1) the state of current knowledge and 2) the important questions to resolve. The comments would be intended to seed discussion. Unless you have compelling reasons to include powerpoints, I would suggest avoiding those for this informal conversation. I will try to ensure we cover as much of the agenda as feasible in the time available, while keeping flexible and responsive to Bill's interests and the flow of discussion. Could I also ask lead discussants to confer with colleagues identified under their area, to discuss how to share the time allocated to introduce topics? Given Bill's extensive knowledge in global health R&D and scientific savvy, this format should work well and allow us to relate the diverse scope of exciting science surrounding global health.

Inline-Images: image001.png Hi all, I just wanted to note that for the Building 33 visit we have Dr. Collins not only visiting Dr. Barry's lab but also he will be touring the BSL3 facility with Mr. Gates. I just wanted to note (and apologize if you already know) that there are certain clearance steps and training that needs to be done before the BSL3 clearance is given. I did not want to assume that Drs. Fauci and Zoon are already cleared to visit the BSL3. If they have not been cleared, Janette LeBron in Dr. Barry's lab was very helpful in guiding me through the process. Many thanks and apologize if I am stating the obvious. Best wishes, Gretchen
