Bill Gates will join our next meeting in person, to take place Friday, June 2, on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Discussions will include innovations in vaccine R&D, led by Tony Fauci. Emphasis will be placed on therapeutic vaccines as well as developments in structure-based immunogen design. In addition, we will discuss new concepts in point-of-care diagnostics, and measures to create a durable network of African sites capable of licensure standard trials, among other capacity needs. This latter topic will include requirements to enable clinical testing of CEPI priority vaccines, as well as the activities of the Coalition for African Research and Innovation (CARI) to incentivize African governments to support and sustain biomedical R&D infrastructure. We would be delighted if you would be available to participate, and join Bill and conference participants in these important discussions. If so, we would hope you could join us in a panel discussion surrounding infrastructural and training requirements in Africa, and future directions of CARI. These discussions are truly timely. Typically we have followed Bill on the "non-conference room" and "non-confidential" parts of his visits, capturing the learning he's doing. We also typically take 5-10 minutes at the end of the visit and have Bill stand outside or inside for a "stand up" interview where he runs over what he just saw. We'd love to chat with you about the best way to be unobtrusive followers on this upcoming trip. Jen can set up a call next week. In case you're interested, here are some images of the buildings where the meeting (Porter) and tour (VRC) will take place. They are right next to each other on campus and are connected by the road and a courtyard/sidewalk. We can talk specifics about what's happening inside VRC tomorrow--I just found out they are amending the schedule.
