Bill Gates will join our next meeting in person, to take place Friday, June 2, on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Discussions will include innovations in vaccine R&D, led by Tony Fauci. Emphasis will be placed on therapeutic vaccines as well as developments in structure-based immunogen design. In addition, we will discuss new concepts in point-of-care diagnostics, and measures to create a durable network of African sites capable of licensure standard trials, among other capacity needs. This latter topic will include requirements to enable clinical testing of CEPI priority vaccines, as well as the activities of the Coalition for African Research and Innovation (CARI) to incentivize African governments to support and sustain biomedical R&D infrastructure. We would be delighted if you would be available to participate, and join Bill and conference participants in these important discussions. If so, we would hope you could join us in a panel discussion surrounding infrastructural and training requirements in Africa, and future directions of CARI. These discussions are truly timely. As discussed at WEF and other venues, to accelerate progress and new potentials in translational science, new African partnerships and platforms are needed to plan efficiently and implement high-quality multi-site research, harmonized standards and best practices, training and robust use of informatics, among other capabilities - yielding greater impact than any sum of unique, individual effort. I know this has been a topic of continuing interest during your time at J&J. Your thoughtful perspectives would be of great value as we consider joint strategies and engage industry partners.
