Dr. Trevor Mundel BIO Dr. Trevor Mundel, president of the Global Health Program, leads the foundation's efforts in research and development of health solutions including vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics, focusing on health problems that have a major impact in developing countries but get too little attention and funding. He oversees the Global Health Program's work which harnesses innovations in science and technology, to fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Mundel joined the foundation in 2011. Prior to joining the Gates Foundation, Dr. Mundel served as Head of Global Development Functions for Novartis Pharmaceuticals, where he was is responsible for the development of drug candidates provided by the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) or licensing partners. Prior to joining Novartis, Dr. Mundel worked for Warner Lambert and Pfizer in senior clinical development roles including Director in Central Nervous System Clinical Development and Head of Experimental Medicine, respectively. In both instances, Dr. Mundel was recruited to restructure their research and development programs and streamline the process of translating basic research into new drugs. Dr. Mundel is a proponent of modeling and simulation, using mathematical models to optimize and expedite everything from biochemical drug mechanisms to decision-making and profits. Dr. Mundel's appointment may reflect the Gates Foundation's desire to apply that approach to their health and drug development projects. Dr. Mundel holds an M.D. from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He also studied Mathematics, Logic and Philosophy at Balliol College of the University Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and then completed graduate studies in Mathematics at the University of Chicago, where he focused on Dynamical Systems and Neural Networks. Dr. Mundel completed training in Neurology at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Dr. Boris Nikolic BIO Dr. Boris Nikolic is a Scientific Advisor to Bill Gates at Bill Gates Catalyst 3 (bgC3) and at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). He received his MD from Zagreb Medical School and his clinical training from the University's Medical Center, University of Zagreb, Croatia. In 1994, Dr. Nikolic joined the Harvard Graduate Program in Immunology (postdoctoral fellowship in transplantation immunology). Subsequently, Dr. Nikolic continued to serve in roles of increasing authority including postdoctoral fellowship, Instructor in Surgery and Medicine to Assistant Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Between 2002 and 2007, Founder and Director, Advanced Immunology Laboratory for Tolerance Induction Stem Cell Transplantation, Renal Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Medical School. In 2007, Dr. Nikolic joined the BMGF and in 2010 he joined bgC3. Dr. Nikolic is the author of over 70 articles and patent applications and co-founder of three biotechnology companies. Research interests: immunogenetics, immunological tolerance induction for transplant, auto immunity and stem cell research.
