SOVID vaccination has <eep you out of the write this, at any coronaviruses, flus, and the respiratory virus known as RSV--and with some luck, we could even eradicate all three virus families. No more second doses. One of the big hurdles in COVID vaccination has been the need to deliver two doses. It's an inconvenience for people who can get to a clinic or pharmacy easily, who don't have to worry about child care, and who can get time off work, but for others, it's a huge barrier. New formulations of vaccines would give you the same protection with one shot as you now get with two; given the work that's already under way, I think this is an achievable medium-term goal. No more boosters. Although COVID vaccines help keep you out of the hospital if you get sick, their benefits in reducing infection and sickness wane over time. An ideal vaccine would protect you for your whole life, rather than requiring yearly boosting; research into the immune system should allow us to figure out how to provide such long-lasting protection. Total protection. The best COVID vaccines available (as I write this, at any rate) cut your risk of infection by about 50 percent. If we could get that number closer to 100 percent, then we would shut down the spread of the disease substantially--breakthrough cases would be a thing of the past. We need to generate more protection in your mucosal tissues including the mouth and nose. No more ice chests. Vaccines would be far easier to deliver, particularly in the developing world, if they didn't have to be kept cold all the time. Researchers have been working on this problem since at least 2003, and we still don't have
