The purpose of the meeting was to figure out how we could ask for $30 billion for pandemic preparedness and put it into the American Jobs Plan bill. The NIH had put in a proposal through HHS of close to $30 billion for our needs alone. There appears to have been some confusion as to the fact that HHS did not send down our request to the NSC in time for inclusion in the NSC document that was being discussed at the meeting. This led to a lot of running around on my part and on the part of Francis Collins and Larry Tabak to figure out how we can get our request properly represented in the discussion. It seemed to have worked out OK as I together with Eric Lander made a presentation to the IPC that indicated the broad scope of our needs without necessarily mentioning the budget. It was one of those times where you walk in the morning and find out that you have to do something that nobody told you about until one hour before you had to do it. I refer to my need to make a presentation on behalf of the NIH to the IPC. • • Did a Fireside chat with the American College of Physicians. The chat was chaired by Dorilyn Moyer. In addition, I was presented with the 2021 Boyle award from the American College of Physicians. To illustrate how flooded I am with things , I had no idea I was being awarded the Joseph F. Boyle award and I had to make comments accepting the award. I had to quickly scramble to get Kim to go on the Internet and find out just what the Joseph F. Boyle award is. As it turns out it is an award bestowed upon a current or former government official who has provided outstanding public service to improving the delivery of health care. Again, I am running at such an amazingly fast pace that I do not know what I am about to do until I sit in front of the zoom and do it. • Met by Zoom with POTUS and VPOTUS for our regular weekly update.
