I agree that the term "payoff" in the headline is a little inflammatory and intended to attract attention. Respectfully, whether Dr. Fauci does or does not merit professional recognition for his role in dealing with the pandemic is not the issue. The problem is a large financial reward to a U.S. government official from an institution that is closing tied to a foreign government. That is problematic for the reasons that I tried to explain in the article. I hope you have considered whether you will still defend this practice when a university supported by a government with which you do not agree gives a large financial reward to a government official for a policy with which you also do not agree. That was the point of the article. It is accepting the financial component -- if Dr. Fauci does indeed accept it -- not the professional recognition that creates the impropriety. No personal affront to Dr. Fauci or to the Dan David Foundation or its distinguished board was intended. But thank you for sharing your perspective and contributing to dialogue on this important issue. E.
