June 18, 2003 - Went to West Wing of WH to brief General John Gordon the new
Director of the WH Office of Homeland Security and Special Assistant to the President
for Terrorism. I briefed him on what the NIH Biodefense Research Agenda was. Good
guy. We had a nice discussion.
Also, delivered a standing room only Grand Rounds at the Lipsett Auditorium on
SARS.
June 19, 2003 - Appeared on a panel at the Council of Foreign Relations with Ted
Koppel (Chair), Patti Stonesifer (Gates) and Senator Durbin to discuss "Are we prepared
to deal with global pandemics?".
June 20, 2003 - Appeared on CNN's Lou Dobbs show to discuss emerging and reemerging diseases.
July 2, 2003 - Attended White House ceremony for the announcement of Randall Tobias
as the Coordinator of the President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief. Randy is
former CEO of Lilly. Pres. (as usual) mentioned me and said that it was an honor to have
me there. I strongly recommended to TGT that Mark Dybul be appointed in the State
Department to the new program to help Joe O'Neill who was clearly emerging as the
second in command.
July 2 - 7, 2003 - Much attention paid to post-war guerilla action in Iraq with several
USA service people getting killed in terrorist/guerilla action.
July 8, 2003 - Attended meeting in Situation Room of the White House chaired by
Richard Falkenrath. Attending were Deputies of all of the relevant agencies, Carol Kuntz,
Ken Bernard, Jorge Tavel, Bob Kadlac etc. Purpose was to agree upon a long range Plan
for SARS called CONPLAN. Also, discussed revamping the organizational structure
among the various Agencies for a coherent Biodefense Agenda.
Appeared on CNBC's Capitol Report with Alan Murray and Gloria Borger to
discuss the President Bushes Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. I had the opportunity to
praise the POTUS for his leadership in this Plan.
July 9, 2003 - Visited new AIDS Coordinator for the Plan (Randall Tobias) at the State
Dept. and briefed him on how the President's Plan came about and how I suggest he
implement it. I strongly suggested that he get Mark Dybul to work for him since Mark
was so important in putting the details of the plan together.
July 12-18, 2003 - Trip to Paris for the 2nd Annual International AIDS Society (IAS)
meeting. I gave the "Extraordinary Plenary" lecture on Monday, July 14 on the topic of
"HIV and AIDS: 20 Years of Science". I was immediately followed by Nelson Mandela
who gave a lecture on the societal aspects of 20 years of AIDS. My talk was extremely
well received; many said that it was the best talk that they had ever heard me give. There
