'er 1 "30 or, BC on Dec. 8, 2010 - Science Management Review Board (SMRB) of NIH (of which I am a member) has been and continues to discuss Francis Collins' intention of merging NIDA and NIAAA, dissolving NCRR, as well as and more importantly creating a National Center for the Advancement of Translational Science (NCATS) at NIH to include the CTSAs and CAN RAID TRND and Molecular libraries. Francis is dead set on starting a new center and is using the SMRB to endorse it. I have made it clear that I do not think that this is a good idea since it is redundant (nothing broke). Also, bad idea at a time of flat, if not decreasing, NIH budget. Dec. 9, 2010 - Major breakthrough in NIH prevention with the results of the PrEP study (iPrex) showing that daily Truvada to uninfected MSM decrease acquisition of HIV infection by 44% and in those who take the meds every day, it decreases acquisition by 90%. I did much media on this Dec. 13, 2010 - Major outbreak of Cholera in Haiti. Traced to contaminant of a river (used for drinking and washing in rural part of Haiti) by UN Nepalese soldier with asymptomatic cholera. I appear of Diane Rehm show discussing cholera. Dec. 17, 2010 - I deliver the Walter Dzau lecture at Brigham and Women's Hospital (invited by Paul Farmer) on "30 Years of HIV/AIDS: A Personal Journey". Overwhelming hit with prolonged applause. I spoke of my involvement from first day and told the story of the "Birth of PEPFAR". Jan. 14, 2011 - Appeared on Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN in NYC for a special on "30 Years of AIDS". There will likely be increasing media events this year since this is indeed the 30th Anniversary of the recognition of AIDS. Jan. 15-16, 2011 - Was Keynote Speaker at a Keystone Meeting in Vancouver, BC on Tuberculosis. Large (~800) audience, mostly post-docs. Very well received. Feb. 15-16, 2011 - Went to San Juan to deliver the Opening Keynote at the NIAID/CDC/PAHO-sponsored Dengue Symposium. Great time. In accordance with my expanding to more emphasis on Global Health and Emerging Diseases. Feb. 24-26, 2011 - Parents' Weekend at Stanford. Absolutely wonderful time to see Ali in her beautiful school setting. Spent prior night in SF with Chris at the Queen Anne's B & B and went to Jackson-Fillmore Restaurant. Days at Stanford were great. Saw women's basketball team clinch the PAC -10 championship for the 11th year in a row by defeating Oregon. Also, saw #1 ranking woman tennis player (Barte) and men's volleyball (ranked 4th in Nation). Mar. 7, 2011 - Town Hall meeting for non-HIV clinical trials network. Sensitive issue in that Carol Heilman still is not enthusiastic about it. However, I made it clear exactly what we are going to do.
