their .@?) Nov. 30, 2009 - Attended a World AIDS Day event at the White House (South Court Auditorium. Sec. Clinton and Sec. Sebelius were there as was Eric Goosby. They spoke about PEPFAR. Of note, striking difference from last year when anyone at White House mentioned PEPFAR, they would recognize me in the audience as the main architect of the Program. No one did that this time even though Hillary Clinton saw me and warmly waved at me from the stage. I believe that the new administration speech-writers and staff just have no idea who I am. Sic transit Gloria. Sebelius was her usual cold self and did not even make eye contact with me. Also, (amazingly) when she was with me a day or 2 later actually asked me as we were on the Hill together to speak with the Congressional Black Caucus (who never showed up - ugh!) "now just what do you do and what is your official title". When I told her, she smiled and said: "I just think of you as "the vaccine guy". She did not mean any harm, but she is really clueless....or actually uninterested in any interpersonal relationship at this level. Dec. 2, 2009 - Had dinner with Peggy Hamburg at Indique Restaurant on Connecticut Avenue. Just to catch up on how she is doing as Commissioner of FDA. Really nice person; has not changed. Dec. 5, 2009 - Went to Holiday Party at Sam and Jan Smith Donaldson's home in McLean. Usual warm and enjoyable time. Chris was in Istanbul teaching a course in Bioethics and so I went alone. Usual cast of characters: Colin Powell, General Casey, Ben Bradlee, Lee Hamilton, Antonin Scalia, Nina Totenberg, Bill Plante, John and Debbie Dingle, George Will, Terry McAuliffe, etc. etc. Dec. 9, 2009 - Time Magazine came out with a list of the 10 most important Medical breakthroughs of 2009. #2 was an "AIDS Vaccine" (the Thai trial) and #4 was an H1N1 vaccine. Of note, I played a significant role in the development of both of these. Dec. 12, 2009 - Wonderful Holiday sit-down dinner party at the Academy of Achievement Town House on 16th Street (Black Tie) hosted by Wayne and Catherine Reynolds. Usual cast of stars at the dinner - Senators, Congressmen, Media, etc. "Mystery" gust entertainer was Tony Bennett. The Reynolds's have been very generous to regularly include us at these functions. Dec. 13, 2009 - Holiday Season in full swing with parties, etc. Today parties at Nicki Lurie and Jesse Goodman's; Bill Haseltine's and Hugh and Mimi Auchincloss's. Flu activity really slowing down with sharp drop in cases. More vaccine now available and so push to vaccinate. Dec. 14, 2009 - Gave big talk at CSIS on new treatment approaches to HIV/AIDS at their headquarters on 18th and K Streets, NW. Evening reception at Stone house for Julio Frenk. Good guy. I knew him slightly when he was Minister of Health for Mexico. Dec. 15, 2009 - Much activity at HHS level to get the "team" to work on pushing vaccine since much is now available. HHS is getting anxious (Jenny Backus, Laura Petrou, etc.) about possible "end-of-the-year" news stories that might criticize HHS and USG for
