Did you always receive funding for work that you did? DR. BARIC: What do you mean? MS. SALAZAR: I mean, I think we talked about this a little bit earlier, but, I mean, would there always be a funding stream for work that you did? If you created a virus or did anything like that, would you always be paid for it, and how would you track that? DR. BARIC: So the way research grants work is that there are several aims, sub-aims. And research grants are always written in the context of being more fluid than contracts. So discoveries that you make in the context of doing the science may cause direction changes, which are then typically reported to the NIH, in your progress reports.
