Carole, The Sebelius review is in full steam (and likely to just as easily crash). There is an extremely tight timeline (report due 3/31). Gail Cassell and I have been engaged for the planning for the OM Workshop. The National Biodefense Science Board is also engaged with multiple telecons and meetings scheduled between now and the end of March. Hugh is our ex officio member, but you may get pinged to fill in. The Board is suppose to distill the output of a series of 'white papers' that HHS is hiring a contractor to write as well as the OM Workshop output into a series of recommendations for the report to Sebelius. Finally, you may recall ASF's lunch with Heidi Avery down at the white house. This has advanced such that Tony and I are going downtown on Tuesday to discuss the concept (along with HHS and CDC). Tony needs a one-pager that is essentially a distilled version of our 2007 BioD Strategy update. These along with CDC and HHS will be further gisted to be included in the upcoming state of the union address as part of some grand vision of global health security strategy. Michael G Kurilla, MD-PhD Director, Office of BioDefense Research Affairs Associate Director for BioDefense Product Development DMID, NIAID, NIH, DHHS Iam interested in how to live in a world we dont understand very well -in other words, while most human thought (particularly since the enlightenment) has focused us on how to turn knowledge into decisions, Iam interested in how to turn lack of information, lack of understanding, and lack of "knowledge" into decisions - Nassim Nicholas Taleb
