But it's possible to take this idea too far--to assume that the next pandemic threat will
look exactly like COVID. It may not. It could be more infectious, passing more easily from one
person to another. Or it could, unfortunately, be deadlier. Worst of all, it could be both.
The key is to be ready to adapt our response to the problem at hand. In the next major
outbreak, the pathogen might not be so much worse for older people as COVID is, or it might
spread by lingering on surfaces or be transmitted through human feces.
Let's go through the plan, step by step.
1. Make better tools.
All my work in software and philanthropy stems from a simple idea: Innovation can improve
lives and solve important problems, whether it's reducing childhood deaths or making education
more accessible to more people. When Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and I imagined a day
when there would be a computer on every desk and in every home, that struck many people as a
pipe dream. But we got to be part of the digital revolution that made it happen.
'The same goes for health. The advances in biology and medicine in the past few decades
alone have unlocked phenomenal new ways to treat and prevent disease, including new vaccines.
But these advances do not simply happen on their own. As the decades-long story of mRNA
vaccines shows, ideas and research must be nurtured, sometimes for more than a decade, before
they produce anything of practical use.
