clinical trials. The consortium supports an international network of 20 investigators in the United
States., Europe and Africa, incorporating four core laboratories and three nonhuman primate
laboratories. Scientific leadership of the consortium resides at the VRC.

"Decade of Vaccines" Collaboration and Related Activities
The "Decade of Vaccines" Collaboration (DoVC), launched in 2010, brought together multiple
constituencies and stakeholders to produce a Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP). BMGF, NIAID and
WHO played key leadership roles in the DoVC. The GVAP was endorsed by the World Health
Assembly in 2012. The DoVC formally "sunset" in December 2012.

In March, 2013, representatives of BMGF, NIAID, and WHO signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) to formally recognize their continuing collaborative efforts in vaccine
R&D. A major activity under this MOU is the Global Vaccine and Immunization Research
Forum (GVIRF). The purpose of the GVIRF is to track progress in the R&D arena against the
goals and strategic objectives of the Global Vaccine Action Plan, and to provide an
opportunity to identify and capitalize on R&D opportunities. BMGF, NIAID, and WHO are all
represented on the Secretariat of the GVAP and the GVIRF. The first GVIRF will take place 46 March 2014 in Bethesda MD, and approximately every 18 months thereafter.

Development of a Second-Generation Broadly Neutralizing Antibody Product to Prevent
HIV-1 Infection (2GVRC01)
Goal: Develop a second generation broadly neutralizing antibody product to prevent HIV-1 infection,
with improved potency and longer half-life

Multinational Study of Enteric Infections and their Relation to Malnutrition, Growth,
Development and Vaccine Response (MAL-ED)
Goal: Understand the complex interaction between enteric infections, malnutrition, and impaired
growth and cognitive development in order to design better intervention strategies
Funding: $30M (2008-2013)

Researchers at sites in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, South Africa, and Tanzania
are conducting longitudinal studies using harmonized protocols to describe the global pattern of
nutritional and enteric disease factors influencing early childhood development, among populations
in highly endemic countries. Central questions to be addressed by this work include: 1) Whether
specific enteric pathogens or combinations of pathogens have stronger associations with
malnutrition than others; 2) Whether there is a particularly vulnerable period in infancy/early
childhood during which specific enteric infections cause greater morbidity; and, 3) Whether results
from one locale can be extrapolated to other populations based on common environmental and
biological determinants.
