tuberculosis testing. Samples needing a viral load test are sent to the molecular lab and
those requiring a CD4 test are sent to flow cytometry lab. HIV antibody testing is
performed in the serology lab. Besides laboratory testing in support of patient care, the
RHSP facility has a research mandate which the facility is fully capable to pursue.

Molecular Capacity
The RHSP molecular biology capacity is demonstrated by the more than 18,000 HIV
viral load tests have been performed within the facility in support of ARV treated
patients. Additionally the facility is equipped with real time PCR capacity. An ABI 7900
has been maintained for years and is currently used for protocols for the quantitation of
HBV and detection of etiologic agents causing GUDs. Basic research can be conducted
with gel electrophoresis systems, UV-Vis spectrophotometry with NanoDrop 2000 and
gel documentation using a gel logic 100 system.
