WASHINGTON, DC 20510-6250
June 23, 2026
The Honorable Chris Wright
Secretary
Department of Energy
1000 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20585
Dear Secretary Wright,
As you know, the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is conducting an
investigation into the origins of COVID-19 and taxpayer-funded life sciences research. Through
the course of the investigation, I have obtained information that leads me to believe that Bill
Gates may have held a Department of Energy "Q" clearance.
For this reason, I request you provide written responses to the following questions no later than
5:00 PM on June 30, 2026:
1. Has William Henry Gates III (DOB: October 28, 1955) ever held a Department of Energy
"Q" clearance or access authorization?
a.
If yes, please provide the date(s) upon which his "Q" clearance or access
authorization became active and the corresponding termination date, if applicable.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Rand Paul, M.D.
Chairman
U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland
Security and Governmental Affairs
