We have been friends for many years. I respect him dearly and greatly. He's an incredible scientist, amazing human being and congratulations to him for all the job that he has done. I know retirement doesn't mean he will stop working. Retiring for him is like changing a tyre, meaning another mission, and I look forward to continue working with him closely through other things he will, I know, continue to do. So, I wish him all the very best. Tony is so special and everybody knows, I think. With COVID, we are still doing worse with deaths than any other country: Cumulative confirmed COVID-19 deaths per million people in the last 12 months Due to varying protocols and challenges in the attribution of the cause of death, the number of confirmed deaths may not accurately represent the true number of deaths caused by COVID-19. wc 1,200 United States 1,000 Italy - United Kingdom Germany Spain France Z Mexico > Australia -- Brazil _ _ South Korea ge ~-- Canada oa Taiwan South Africa ee = SA 0 = ---- T T ug 30,2021 Nov1,2021

August 29, 2022 Previous 2 days my daughters and partners were here for the weekend. Very slow with regard to COVID. Clearly people like John Moore (who is the most reasonable) and Paul Offit (not so much) are pushing back on the drive to boost people in September with the "updated" BA.5 bivalent since they say that boosters are not needed (Offit) or that the original vaccine is as good as the bivalent (Moore) Ashish Jha called me today asking advice on when to give the POTUS the bivalent BA.5 boost. I told him 3 months after his recent infection. Same for the First Lady. ------- Monkeypox cases starting to plateau - probably a combination of behavioral modification + vaccine availability: Monkeypox: Daily confirmed cases 7-day rolling average los 1,000 World United States Or + ; r r May 12,2022

We went on to reminisce about the things we did together to take away the creation of project bioshield. I told him how impressed I was with what his daughter lives was doing and pushing back against the extreme right and the trump people. He is obviously very proud of her and expressed that. Sept. 2, 2022 There is a very interesting situation that has emerged from the White House particularly involving Ron Klain and Ashish Jha in the context of the BA.5 bivalent booster shot. The FDA has authorized and the CDC has approved the use of the bivalent BA.5 booster for individuals 12 years of age and older. The concern of Ron and Ashish is that we need to sell it to the American people in a manner in which they feel this is something "new and different" that they really should partake of. However, even though we all feel that people should be getting a booster shot, to sell it as something that is going to be much better than the prototype boost would be somewhat of a stretch since although one can project that there would be an advantage of a variant specific boost, early indications from an immunological standpoint indicate that although it is likely going to be somewhat better it is not going to be a lot better. In addition, there is the push back from some in the scientific community that we are doing this with very little human clinical data. One can extrapolate from clinical immunological data using a BA.1 bivalent variant boost where the data are plentiful. In addition, we have extraordinary amount of data on the safety of using this type of vaccine in billions of doses and billions of people worldwide. Also, the preclinical mouse data with the specific BA.5 bivalent vaccine indicates that it gives an anti-BA.5 response much higher then the prototype vaccine does. Ron and Ashish are struggling with ways to sell this and the latest thing they're trying to do is to say that it could be part of a yearly booster similar to what we do with flu. All of this is fine except that they're straining to get a message so that a lot of people will get boosted when in fact this is unlikely going to be the case. No matter what we say, the message will not change the facts and we're getting close to the line of overselling something. In one instance today, Ron was upset that Vivek had said that this was an updated "boost" instead of an updated "vaccine" because he felt people don't want this to be yet again another boost whereas if we sell it as an updated vaccine in the context of making it a yearly occurrence then that would be perceived as something that is truly new.
