August 13, 2022 More drama with regard to the CDC and Rochelle Walenski. After much going back and forth between the CDC and the other docs including me, Vivek, Steve Cha, and to some extent David Kessler, we thought we had gotten them pulled back from making the statement that the vaccines were not effective at all in preventing infection and transmission. The reason this is an issue is that if they came out with that statement, which in fact is not entirely true since there is some degree of modest but declining protection as you would expect, then this would conflict with the statement and effort of recommending that people get the updated bivalent BA.5 vaccine in September. In addition, it would undermine the DoJ's efforts at mandates for vaccines under certain circumstances. In any event, the CDC agreed to pull back on the statement of absolute lack of efficacy of vaccines against infections and transmission and take a more measured approach of saying that the vaccines provides only modest and waning efficacy against infection and transmission and that is why we should heed the advice of getting the updated booster in Sept. However, although they did this on their website, the MMWR that cam out yesterday had the same original damning language. When Larry Horowitz and Ashish noticed this, Larry went off the wall and in a somewhat agitated manner called me up this AM and said that this is the last straw and he was sure that when Ron Klain gets back from Spain this weekend he would fire Rochelle. Ashish was more measured and seems to have come to the conclusion that sooner or later (maybe not right now) Rochelle would have to go. Let us see what happens.....probably nothing

August 16, 2022 I had a very important and moving conversation with Ron Klain in his West Wing Office today at 11:45 AM (bright, sunny, mild day). I announced to Ron that I would be stepping down from all of my positions including chief medical advisor to the President. I will make the announcement next week and my date for stepping down will be sometime in December of this year. One of the concerns that Jeff Zients and I had would be that Ron would want to push back on my leaving giving all the trouble that he's having with the CDC. However, he somewhat surprised me by saying that his instinct would be to push strongly to convince me not to leave, given that he considers me "one of the most important public servants in the history of the country" given that I have saved millions of lives over the last several years. He would be almost embarrassed trying to convince me to change my mind about something that I obviously have thought about for some time and that I thoroughly deserve. He went on to say so many nice things that I was embarrassed. He said that he considered it a major privilege in his life to have had the opportunity to work with me both during the Obama administration with Ebola and now with COVID and monkey pox. He said that he would arrange tomorrow for me to either see the president if the president comes to the White House tomorrow; if he does not come to the White House then arrange which was used as the blueprint for 22106 icationa phone call between me and the president tomorrow. It was a most moving meeting the extraordinary praise shown towards me and the sincere appreciation for all that I have done for the country and the world during my long career.
